Coronation Street star Sue Cleaver has been confirmed for a new role just weeks after filming her exit as Eileen Grimshaw.

The soap actor is swapping the small screen for the stage and is set to appear in an upcoming theatre production this autumn.

Cleaver has joined the cast of a show for a headline production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Snake In The Grass alongside former Holby City star Nicola Stephenson and stage actor Lisa Zahra.

Described as “a darkly comic thriller about family, secrets and manipulation,” the dark comedy follows sisters Miriam and Annabel as they reunite after the death of their father.

A synopsis for the play reads: “Annabel returns home after the death of her cruel father. Reunited with her sister Miriam the siblings bicker as buried truths resurface. Tensions grow when his former nurse claims Miriam murdered her father, threatening to expose the crime.”

Directed by Francesca Goodridge, the production will run at Theatr Clwyd in Wales from 15 September to 4 October, before it heads to the Octagon Theatre in Bolton, from 9-25 October.

Last week, Coronation Street aired Cleaver’s final scenes as Eileen, who waved goodbye to the cobbles to move to Thailand with her son Jason, with Ryan Thomas briefly reprising the role for the storyline.

Previously speaking to Digital Spy about her exit, Cleaver said: “I said very much that I would like Eileen to go off to pastures new, to mirror what I’m doing in a sense. I just think it’s time for a change.

“So it was perfect. I’m so happy with the ending. I was so humbled by it and the way it had been written and what it is. I felt very grateful to have such a wonderful ending written. It seemed very, very apt.”
