ITV has issued a new scam warning to Coronation Street and Emmerdale fans.
The broadcaster has previously shared concerns about a rise in fake soap star social media accounts, and in a new Instagram post has urged viewers to be “vigilant”.
“Please be aware that actors from both Coronation Street and Emmerdale are currently being impersonated by scammers across all social media platforms,” the statement read.
“No cast member will ever directly request money for messages, meetings or any kind of personal interaction on social media.”
ITV said it is “aware” that “these sophisticated impersonations can include deep-fake footage (where it appears to be the actor talking but isn’t) and personal messages which seem to be realistic and in character”.
“We urge everybody to be vigilant,” it added. “Please report any concerns to the relevant platform. The legitimate way of meeting with real members of the cast is via official ‘meet and greet’ events run by ITV Star Tours.”
Last summer, the broadcaster said that these scams were happening “more frequently” and added fans should “take great care when conversing on social media”.
Among those who have had their likeness used is Emmerdale‘s Lisa Riley, who revealed both in 2023 and last year that fans had been targeted.
“FAKE FAKE FAKE. I’ve had so many messages this week regarding this post!!!” she wrote last month.
“If they have placed my name with anything it’s FAKE!!!! I’m surprised anyone ever believes anything anymore!! It’s not true, it’s not me, it’s faker than fake, and keeps being FAKE!!!”
Coronation Street‘s Sue Cleaver has also warned fans about her likeness being used for a scam.
