“Is this really happening?” asked General Hospital‘s Holly when Robert showed up at the airport to say that he’d be leaving town with her… and it was a question asked by a whole lot of viewers,
too.
For some viewers, it was the perfect ending to a love story which has unfolded over decades. “We missed out on too much time together,” Robert told his ex in a scene which reminded many
of Casablanca‘s famous ending. “Bad decisions, wrong decisions, fate. No more. We aren’t missing on any more time!”
Others, however, were extremely unhappy about Robert’s choice… and for more than one reason. Obviously, those who’ve waited a long time for Robert and Anna to find their way back to one another didn’t love him flying off with Holly. But as many pointed out, both he and Holly are now abandoning the daughter he only just found out exists.
Disappointing that Robert chose Holly over staying and building a relationship with Sasha. Holly is definitely not worth it
What, many wondered, was the point of making Sasha their daughter only to have Holly and Robert skip town? While it gave Robert and Holly the proverbial happy ending, it did so at the expense of the Cody/Sasha relationship which many viewers have come to love.
So because RnH’s “love” couldn’t stand on its own, tptb retconned an affair baby on the back of Anna Devane. Sasha deserved better than two deadbeats for parents, no job, & a lost love interest. Hopefully this is the end of being tortured by these returns. ✌️
The move also seemed questionable given that over the past year or more, the writers had been building — if ever so slowly — a romance between Robert and his courthouse sparring partner, Diane.
The final moments of Robert and Holly’s farewell offered fans a bit of hope as he said, “This will be a round-trip ticket.” But will the twosome return? It’s no secret that Holly’s portrayer, Emma Samms, continues to struggle with the effects of long Covid. “If it wasn’t for the fact that people at General Hospital are so understanding of it and accommodating, I would not be able to work like I do,” she told Variety upon her return this past September.
And if Samms opts not to return, how do the writers un-reunite Holly and Robert? As with all things soap-related, only time will provide the answers.
