EastEnders actor Max Bowden has been announced to star in a brand-new musical titled Midnight Cowboy.
Based on James Leo Herlihy’s book of the same, Midnight Cowboy follows a young man named Joe Buck (played by Paul Jacob French), who is desperate to escape his dead-end past.
Bowden will take on the role of Rico ‘Ratso’ Rizzo, who crosses paths with Joe after he moves to New York City to find “wealth and glory”.
The official synopsis continues: “The pair join forces, prepared to do whatever it takes to achieve their dreams, even if it means surrendering a part of themselves. But New York ain’t no dream – it’s a jungle and survival requires sacrifice…”
Other cast members include Tori Allen-Martin, Elena Breschi, Joanne Henry, Nick Len, Hollie-Ann Lowe, Dean Makowski-Clayton, Christian Maynard, Phoebe Roberts, Tim Rogers, Rohan Tickell and Matthew White.
Midnight Cowboy – which has already been adapted into in an Oscar-winning film starring Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman – has been adapted for the stage by Bryony Lavery. Behind the soundtrack is award-winning composer Francis ‘Eg’ White.
The musical will open at Southwark Playhouse Elephant on April 4 and run until May 17. Tickets are now available to purchase here.
Bowden, who exited EastEnders as Ben Mitchell last year, took to Instagram after news was announced to share his excitement over his new role.
“Super excited to be bringing the world premiere of Midnight Cowboy the musical to Southwark playhouse – playing the iconic role of Rico ‘Ratso’ Rizzo, alongside an amazing cast,” he captioned a photo of the poster.
“Come and see us from April 4 – May 17 @swkplay @adamaentertainment. Buzzing for this one.”
