Coronation Street has confirmed that returning character Rob Donovan hasn’t changed his villainous ways.
The schemer’s hidden agenda was revealed to viewers in Monday’s episode as his son Bobby Crawford paid him another visit in prison.
Rob has returned to our screens as Bobby wants him to consider donating a kidney to Carla Connor, who needs a life-saving transplant.
Despite initially scoffing at the idea, Rob changed his mind in the latest episode. He claimed that he wanted to help his sister and make amends for the past after finding religion during his time behind bars.
Bobby wasn’t sure what to believe, but their conversation was interrupted when new inmate Matty Radcliffe caused a scene in the jail’s visiting room.
Matty grabbed a female prison guard and threatened her with a knife. As the tense stand-off escalated, he then used Bobby as a hostage and threatened him too.
The situation looked bleak for Bobby until Rob stepped in to talk Matty down. Rob then found the right moment to overpower Matty, helping the prison guards to restore order and seemingly saving Bobby’s life.
Bobby later returned to Carla with talk of Rob being a changed man, but not everything was as it seemed.
During a moment alone at the prison, it was revealed that Rob had slyly set up the entire situation to look good in front of Bobby. Although reluctant, Matty had agreed to the plan after being bribed by Rob.
Rob clearly sees the benefit of getting into Bobby’s good books and worming his way back in with Carla, but what is his endgame?
Marc Baylis, who plays Rob, recently revealed: “He’s not had the easiest of times in prison, as I don’t think anyone would do for that amount of time, particularly someone who did what he did to a young woman.
“It’s not something that he’s had an easy journey with, and it’s something that he has huge regrets over with the way that everything played out.
“We do get to see some of that on screen, as well as Rob’s genuine feelings. But with Rob, there are always motives to make his life better than what it is, and that may well get him into trouble yet again.”
Coronation Street‘s producer Kate Brooks also recently said: “We last left Rob languishing in prison. He made mistakes. He comes back to the show and we think he might be a reformed character who has seen the error of his ways, but whether that’s the case or not, I don’t know!
“That causes a lot of trouble for Carla and Lisa. Just when Carla and Lisa think it’s safe to sit down and watch Netflix, Rob Donovan comes along and scuppers all of that.”
