Sonia Fowler’s murder trial is set to be thrown into disarray in upcoming episodes of EastEnders.
Sonia and her fiancé Reiss Colwell were both arrested for the murder of his wife Debbie last year in the BBC soap – but only Reiss is guilty of the crime.
After CCTV footage from Debbie’s care home only places Sonia at the scene of the murder, she has remained in prison ever since while Reiss has walked free.
Bianca Jackson uncovered the truth, but Reiss has kept her captive in a soundproofed lock-up ever since to continue to walk free.
As a heavily pregnant Sonia takes to the stand to plead her innocence, upcoming episodes see her beg Reiss to help her case.
He heads to the prison to visit her, rejecting Martin Fowler’s offer to travel together to the court. There, Sonia asks for his help proving her innocence and tells him how important it is that Bianca is there to support her during the trial.
But when Sonia arrives at court it isn’t just Bianca that isn’t present, but Reiss is also nowhere to be seen.
Later, Martin finds Reiss and tells him that Sonia’s trial has been adjourned due to his actions – but what has Reiss done?
Sonia actor Natalie Cassidy previously shared that the murder charge is her character’s “worst nightmare come true”.
“She absolutely cannot believe it, especially when Reiss has been let off because he has an alibi. I think it happens so quickly and in a flash that she’s just desperately scared about the baby and the impact this level of stress and trauma will have on a pregnancy that’s so fragile,” she said.
“That’s her main concern, losing her baby or having her baby and them taking it away, like what happened with Bex. She’s worried that history is going to repeat itself.”
