Yellowstone isn’t over yet! Less than a week before the Paramount Network show’s series finale, news broke that another spinoff is in the works — this time, starring two of the western’s most beloved characters: Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler.

Deadline reported on December 11, 2024, that Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, who have played Beth and Rip respectively since Yellowstone Season 1, have closed deals to lead a spinoff series as their characters. Taylor Sheridan — the creator of Yellowstone and its other spinoffs — will also run the show for Beth and Rip’s series, which is also expected to include other characters from Yellowstone.

Beth and Rip’s series marks Yellowstone‘s sixth spinoff after Paramount Plus’ 1883, which ran from 2021 to 2022, and 1923, which premiered in 2022 and is set to air its second season in 2025. Other upcoming spinoffs include The Madison (a series following a New York City family who moves to Madison River Valley in Montana); 1944 (a drama centered around the Dutton family during World War II); and 6666 (a show set at the Four Sixes ranch in West Texas.)

Compared to Yellowstone‘s five other spinoffs, Beth and Rip’s show, which is expected to have Yellowstone in its title, will be the most similar to the mother series than any other spinoff to date. Sources told Deadline that, while Yellowstone’s producers and MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios originally considered renewing Yellowstone for a sixth season with Beth and Rip as the new leads, the creative team ultimately decided to focus on a new series instead. The decision to make Beth and Rip’s spinoff a new series would also allow Paramount Network’s parent company, Paramount Global, to keep it within the company’s ecosystem unlike Yellowstone which has a pre-existing exclusive streaming deal with NBCUniversal’s Peacock.

Still, Deadline also reported that a sixth season of Yellowstone is not out of the question, which is why Paramount Network, which originally announced that Season 5B would be Yellowstone‘s last, quietly dropped that messaging for the season’s teaser in June, calling it the show’s “epic return” rather than final season. A promo for Yellowstone Season 5B’s finale also calls it a season finale rather than series finale.

News of Beth and Rip’s spinoff also seemingly confirms that both characters will live after Yellowstone Season 5B’s finale, which airs on Paramount Network on December 15, 2024. Ahead of the finale, the only character who seems to be on the chopping block is Jamie Dutton (played by Wes Bentley), who became an even bigger target for Yellowstone‘s characters — namely Beth — after it was revealed that his girlfriend, Sarah, was the one who called the hit on Jamie’s father, John Dutton III, in Yellowstone Season 5B’s premiere, which ended in John’s death.
