We’re just a few weeks away from Christmas and Coronation Street has been getting us into the festive spirit with a steady

stream of spoilers for the Yuletide season.

The ITV soap will be serving up some genuinely unmissable episodes that are sure to interest current fans and lapsed

viewers alike, as legendary character Gail Rodwell bows out following 50 years on the cobbles.

Show bosses have been teasing plans for Gail’s exit and other stories which will be taking centre stage. If you’ve missed any

gossip, here’s your one-stop round-up.

1. Gail’s emotional departure

Coronation Street bosses have confirmed that Gail leaves in the Christmas Day episode. To mark this special occasion, the episode won’t be released early on ITVX, so viewers will have to tune in on the night to see her emotional final scenes.

Gail’s exit storyline revolves around her plans to marry Jesse Chadwick, who recently returned to Weatherfield. The ceremony coincides with various secrets that her family are keeping, which is sure to be a recipe for Platt disaster.

Coronation Street‘s producer Kate Brooks recently told us: “Whether she goes through with [the wedding] or not, I cannot say anything! But this is a story with the Platts at the heart of it.

“It’s really festive. Basically it’s a story about family and how secrets impact and implode on a family. There are a lot of betrayals. Lots of secrets are exposed during this episode and it will be like classic Corrie, with a bit of a twist.”

She added: “All of [the] secrets come to the forefront on Christmas Day. You basically have Gail, who’s going to leave the Street, but in the run-up to Christmas she has found out that some of her nearest and dearest have absolutely betrayed her.

“She doesn’t know who to believe. Even her dear old mum has kind of lied to her and she really struggles with that. She’s thinking: ‘I don’t know whether I want this. I don’t know whether I want to be with Jesse’.

“She contemplates and questions everything and every decision she’s ever made. Obviously Gail has had a really colourful past, so that’s a big part of that Christmas Day episode, but she is there and she is going to leave the Street and it’s going to be so wonderful and sad.”

2. Daniel’s love triangle

Daniel Osbourne’s relationship with Bethany Platt is due to hit the rocks again over the next few weeks.

This leads to the show revisiting Daniel’s feelings for his ex-fiancée Daisy Midgeley, paving the way for twists and turns over Christmas and beyond.

Kate Brooks commented: “It’s a love triangle that keeps on giving and we will certainly continue that through December and into the new year.

“Daniel is in love with two women – that’s what it boils down to. He loves Bethany but he also loves Daisy. Not many people can pull that off, but if anyone can, a Barlow can. He is absolutely torn over what to do for the best and it’s ultimately his head over his heart.

“Daniel wants to be with Bethany. He wants to channel his love and his future with Bethany, but sometimes when you make a little mistake, things can come back and bite them on the bums, so that’s essentially what we’re doing with that triangle.”

3. Shona keeps a big secret

Coronation Street has sparked rumours that Shona Platt will cheat on her husband David in the run-up to Christmas as his deception over her son Clayton Hibbs comes to light.

Although show bosses have stopped short of confirming any infidelity, we know that Shona spends a mysterious night away from home in early December, and is also seen knocking on a mystery person’s hotel room door the following week.

Kate Brooks teased: “David has made massive mistakes in hiding visiting orders from Clayton.

“This goes on to have massive consequences and Shona hits that self-destruct button in the build-up to Christmas and makes some really terrible judgement calls.”

She added: “What is important for me about David and Shona is that they can both really mess up, but that love that they have is so strong.

“But can they overcome that? I don’t know. But all those secrets come to the forefront on Christmas Day.”

4. Leanne’s revenge

Leanne Battersby is currently plotting revenge against her ex-partner Nick Tilsley and sister Toyah Habeeb after discovering that they’re still an item.

Monday’s episode (December 2), which is streaming now on ITVX, sees Leanne stealing Toyah’s passport to open up a new bank account in her name. Has she learned a trick or two from fraudster Rowan Cunliffe?

This story will bubble away across December, culminating in tense scenes on Christmas Day.

Kate Brooks told us: “Rather than go down the route which is expected, of her taking it on the chin or moving on, Leanne really wants to make them pay and she is really intent on getting her own revenge.

“It can be at the detriment of her own sanity sometimes, but she wants to make them realise what they’ve done to her. Nick’s betrayal is one thing, but the betrayal of a sister is huge, and I just love that dynamic between Toyah and Leanne – I think it’s fantastic.”

She added: “That all comes to the forefront on Christmas Day and it doesn’t end well for anyone.

“They do spend Christmas together, so at least they’re together! Just don’t ever spend Christmas Day with your ex and your sister!”

5. Carla and Lisa’s relationship progresses

Kate Brooks commented: “It becomes public knowledge during Christmas. They are happy during the Christmas period. Carla initially flinches a little bit at the idea of people gossiping. It’s not about sexuality but she’s a bit unsure.

“But once she realises everyone is absolutely fine about it, then it’s all systems go. Christmas will be when they really commit to each other, when they declare how they feel for each other.”

6. Kit gets up to no good

Coronation Street star Jacob Roberts, who plays Kit Green, has named his character as one to watch out for during the festive season.

Jacob recently told Inside Soap magazine: “Kit ends up being a bit of a naughty boy this Christmas, which I don’t think the audience is going to like him for.

“Every script I read, I’m excited to film it, as there’s always something in them that makes me think: ‘Yeah, you’re being a right so-and-so there’. I love playing those sorts of scenes.

“Kit’s really in the mix over the next few weeks as he’s involved in other people’s stories, and also some of his own.”
