Yellowstone star Kelly Reilly has revealed the unlikely inspiration behind her character in the hit-drama
series, following the explosive mid-season premiere.
For the last six years, Reilly played only daughter Beth Dutton in Yellowstone who we know and love for
her ruthless ploys and iconic one liners.
The only place you can stream every episode of Yellowstone is on Stan.
Speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show this week, Reilly, who was born in Chessington, England, admitted she “stole” Beth’s voice from one of her co-stars.
“Just hearing your voice right now, I would have never guessed you had an accent,” host Drew Barrymore told the British actress.
“Well that’s thanks to my dialect coach, she’s amazing,” Reilly replied.
“I certainly wanted to get that Montana dialect correct… But for Beth it was all about the voice because she smokes a little bit, drinks a lot of bourbon…” teased Reilly as she instantly got into character.
“She has a rasp,” Drew pointed out excitedly.
“Yes and I kind of listened to Kevin [Costner] a lot because he really deepened his voice for John Dutton and so I just stole it, I just copied him,” she laughed.
Well, considering John Dutton is Beth’s father in the series, we love to hear it!
Further in the interview, Reilly revealed she drew on personal experiences to bring to life not only Beth but the emotions in her scenes.
“Just before we started filming, before I got that job, I had gone through some things in my own personal life. I was in deep grief and I hadn’t figured out who I was beyond that, in that moment,” said Reilly.
“I was in the fog… and this character lands in my lap,” she continued.
“She became this sort of… life raft for me. So I got to sort of hide in her for a minute while I came back to life, and I found my own strength and my own happiness again.
“And I miss her, I miss her when I’m not playing her. I feel her, I feel that power.”
“Getting into the skin of this primal woman is a lot of fun. She’s invigorating but she’s also exhausting.”
