Coronation Street star Julia Goulding has addressed legendary co-star Helen Worth’s exit as Gail Rodwell, admitting it will
be “heartbreaking” without her.
Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Helen would be departing the cobbles after 50 years, with her final scenes set to air
soon.
As Gail puts her house on the market, Julia explained that her character Shona is “trying to stay positive” at the possibility of making a fresh start.
“Shona is the beacon of positivity in this difficult time, she’s trying to stay positive for the kids and for David who has been really down about it,” she said.
Asked whether she is genuinely positive or trying to keep the family together, Julia said: “I think she does believe what she’s saying, but it’s probably a bit of both to be honest.
“They’re embarking on a new adventure, they don’t know where they’re going to live, but Shona’s doing a lot to try and stabilise their future while David spirals. She is making arrangements to look at flats and houses, remaining positive as ever.”
As for how the Platts will fare without Gail, Julia explained things won’t go “massively well” in the immediate future.
“The Platts are such a strong family. It’s heartbreaking we’re losing our matriarch,” she noted.
“But they’re strong enough to get through it together. It’s a new chapter and an uncertain time for the Platts, but Gail has cemented such a good foundation for the family they can only survive it.”
Speaking previously about her exit, Helen said: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.”
