Coronation Street airs another major turning point in Joel Deering’s storyline in Friday’s episode (September 20).

Betsy Swain could hold the key to Joel’s downfall as she further shares the guilty secret she has been keeping.

Earlier this week, Betsy confided in her friend Sabrina Adetiba about how she’d helped Joel to secure the labour-inducing drugs he used to spike Lauren Bolton with.

Joel came up with the plan because he was trying to kill his and Lauren’s then-unborn baby. He tricked Betsy into being part of his evil actions, lying to her about what he needed the drugs for.

Betsy has been struggling with her conscience ever since discovering that Lauren and Joel’s baby son Frankie is in intensive care.

Some Coronation Street fans have expressed confusion over the latest plot twist, wondering if they’d missed the scenes where Betsy’s involvement was established.

Betsy’s role in the plot actually took place off-camera and was only revealed on screen for the first time this week.

In Friday’s episode, Betsy chooses Carla Connor as her next confidante.

During a private chat at Underworld, Betsy breaks down in front of Carla and admits that she has done something really bad.

Carla calls Betsy’s mum – DS Lisa Swain – to the factory so that she can hear the troubling story too.

As the truth dawns on her, Lisa insists that they need to go to the police station to formally report the matter.
