EastEnders is the soap known for its working-class roots, but it seems even the residents of Walford have been hit by the cost of living crisis.
Viewers were stunned to tune in to the BBC soap earlier this week to learn the eye-watering price of a humble jacket potato in Kathy’s famous cafe.
Eagle-eyed fans noticed the high cost on a menu in the fictional coffee shop, as Ian Beale continued his campaign to become Walford’s new councillor.
Ian has joined forces with Oscar Branning, thought he is unaware that the teen is also secretly working with Elaine Peacock to sabotage the fish and chip shop owner.
A menu visible in the scene showed that a humble spud costs £7.25, though one social media user noted it was ‘cheap’ compared to other eateries in London.
Albert Square residents could get their hands on a burger and fries for £10.50, sandwiches for £3.99 and toasties from £5.25, or £5.65 for a breakfast bap.
Hot beverages were more reasonable, with a cup of tea priced at £2.10, or a coffee for £2.60.
It comes after EastEnders fans hit out at a ‘nonsensical’ blunder during a dramatic seizure scene – as they called for answers from the BBC.
In Monday’s (March 16) episode, it was confirmed Billy and Honey Mitchell, as well as children Janet and Will, have all been on a long holiday.
The family have been away from Walford since February 12, with Bea Pollard (Ronni Ancona) house-sitting in the meantime.
In the latest update, Bea heard from Honey (Emma Barton) that the family would be back from their holiday tomorrow – although fans spotted a plot hole.
He filmed pal Davinder ‘Nugget’ Gulati (Juhaim Rasul Choudhury) after he collapsed at McClunky’s due to a seizure.
Will did not have any dialogue in the scene, which saw Nugget wet himself amid the experience.
However, viewers have been left questioning Will’s presence in Walford at this time, given the family are supposedly away.
They wrote: ‘So now Will is on holiday with his family?
‘So why was he in Walford to silently stand by and record Nugget’s seizure, which went absolutely nowhere;
‘So according to today Will is on the (ridiculously long) holiday with his family – did he just pop back for the day the other week so he could film Nugget’s seizure?!
‘I’m becoming disproportionately obsessed with how little sense all this makes;’
‘I assumed there would be some follow up with it going viral but if so it hasn’t happened yet.
‘I still want to know if Will is staying on his own with Bea and if so I want to see those scenes!;’
‘Bea mentioned all four of them were on holiday at the moment so how was Will in McClunky’s filming Nugget’s seizure?! Silly. Maybe his first storyline will be about his ability to teleport.’
