Coronation Street star Jane Hazelgrove has revealed that she had “run out of money” when she landed a role on the soap six years ago. After a brief stint on the cobbles back in the 1980s, she returned to the ITV soap in 2019 where she has played Bernie Winter ever since.
During a chat with My Weekly magazine, the Corrie actor revealed that her decision to join the famous soap was initially motivated by her needing to buy a new bathroom. She said: “I only came into Coronation Street for 10 episodes to get a new bathroom.”
Explaining further she added that the job offer came at the right time after admitting: “I’d run out of money and when they said: ‘Will you come and do Corrie for a bit?’ I thought ‘Yes! That will pay for a nice white suite.’ “
She added: “I’ve been here for six years now and I’ve just signed for another year. It’s a lovely place to work. I feel very blessed.”
Jane’s first appearance on Corrie came all the way back in 1985 where she had a brief stint playing Sue Clayton. She only lasted seven months during her first stint on the soap before she returned to the cobbles in 2019 where she has played Bernie Winter ever since.
Since her return to the street six years ago, Jane’s character has been involved in some of the soap’s biggest storylines.
In what was one of the most harrowing storylines in recent years, Corrie fans saw Bernie by her son’s side every step of the way during his battle with Motor Neurone Disease, until he passed away in September last year.
After her son’s death, she went on a mission to track down her youngest son, Kit, who she had originally given up for adoption at birth.
While she did finally manage to find her long lost son, their relationship has been filled with tension ever since, despite her best efforts.
In happier news for Jane’s character, her eagerly awaited wedding with Corrie legend Dev Alahan (played by Jimmi Harkishin) is set to take place next week (Wednesday, August 6).
Coronation Street is set to return this evening (Tuesday, July 29) at 8pm on ITV.
