🍼 FORMER CORRIE “VILLAIN” MEL MAGUIRE WELCOMES BABY BOY!

From Weatherfield to Motherhood – Sonia Ibrahim Welcomes Her Second Child with Heartfelt Joy

Not all Coronation Street stories take place on the cobbles. Some unfold quietly, away from the cameras, where life writes its own gentle script. This week, one such chapter has been lovingly shared by Sonia Ibrahim, remembered by long-time Corrie fans as Mel Maguire, the troubled figure at the heart of Bethany Platt’s harrowing storyline.

Now, Sonia embraces a very different role — not in a courtroom, not in a dark alley, but in the softly lit space of motherhood. On Sunday, June 22nd, she gave birth to her second child, a baby boy named Carter Benjamin Machin.

A New Life, A New Beginning

In a tender Instagram post, Sonia introduced her son to the world:

“Sunday 22nd June at 10:26pm my life became complete. My beautiful boy Carter Benjamin Machin arrived, 7lbs of pure perfection. You are loved more than you will ever know little man.”

The accompanying photo was intimate and peaceful — Sonia holding Carter, her gaze fixed on him in the kind of quiet awe only new mothers know. No performance. No pretense. Just the raw simplicity of love.

Warm congratulations flooded the comment section. Lucy Fallon (Bethany Platt) left a sweet message:

“Gorgeous, congratulations xxxxx.”

Others followed, including Hollyoaks co-star Ashley Taylor Dawson and mum-fluencer Lucy Elizabeth Adamson, sharing heartfelt joy at the arrival of Sonia’s new little one.

From “Mel the Villain” to Mum of Two

Sonia’s time on Coronation Street was brief but unforgettable. From December 2016 to October 2017, she portrayed Mel Maguire, a woman caught in the orbit of Nathan Curtis, the manipulative abuser behind Bethany’s grooming storyline.

Mel’s descent — from loyal accomplice to conflicted kidnapper — brought nuance to a difficult role. In her final scenes, she tried to stop Bethany from testifying in court, culminating in a harrowing chase and emotional climax.

It was one of Corrie’s darkest narratives, and Sonia handled it with depth and sensitivity, becoming an unsung hero in the show’s effort to depict real-world abuse.

Life Beyond the Cobbles

In the years since leaving Coronation Street, Sonia Ibrahim has taken on new roles, both on-screen and off. She appeared in Waterloo Road as Jamilah Omar, and more recently joined Hollyoaks as the mysterious Kat, linked to Rex Gallagher (played by Jonny Labey).

But while her acting career has continued, it’s her family life that has drawn the spotlight lately.

Back in February, Sonia announced her pregnancy through a heartwarming video featuring her daughter Sienna, now three years old. The clip showed Sienna holding a sonogram photo, a tiny hand pressed over her soon-to-arrive sibling’s image. It was a quiet, joyful reveal — no tabloids, no headlines. Just family.

A Celebration of Quiet Joy

Less than a month before Carter’s birth, Sonia hosted a baby shower, surrounded by close friends and family. The event was intimate, decorated in baby blue, filled with laughter and dancing. In her words:

“The most perfect afternoon spent with the most beautiful people showering my little Prince… We love you.”

It was a rare public moment — one that reminded fans that behind the characters we watch, the plotlines we follow, there are real people leading real lives.

From Actor to Advocate

Sonia has never shied away from talking about how important her time on Coronation Street was to her career. In a past interview with Lancs Live, she said:

“I was literally over the moon and I cried my eyes out when my agent told me [I was joining]!
It’s such an amazing place to work and it’s been an honour to be here.”

That sense of honour, of gratitude, continues to shape how she approaches her life — not just as an actress, but as a mother, daughter, and now, the parent of two.

A New Chapter Begins

As Sonia adjusts to life with a newborn once again, fans are left smiling, remembering the fierce, conflicted Mel Maguire — and now seeing her in a new light. Life after Weatherfield might not involve scripts or spotlights, but it seems richer, more meaningful, and filled with the kind of real emotion that soaps only ever try to imitate.

Congratulations, Sonia. From one cobbled path to another — this one is paved with love.
