Coronation Street viewers reckon they’ve sussed out the true identity of Rita Tanner’s long-lost offspring, and it turns out they’re right under her nose on the cobblestones.
Rita (played by soap legend Barbara Knox) has been gracing our screens since 1964, holding the title of the second-longest-serving member of the cast after William Roache, who’s been embodying Ken Barlow since episode one in December 1960.
As Weatherfield’s cherished shopkeeper, Rita has woven herself into the fabric of countless major storylines, from a flurry of romantic entanglements to becoming the maternal figurehead for many residents; Rita’s time on the street has consistently brimmed with drama.
But now, ardent viewers are buzzing with speculation over a forthcoming storyline twist – Rita’s mysterious estranged child is believed to be lurking among the familiar faces of the street.
The recent Rovers’ drag night, hosted by the fabulous Kristin Squat Thomas (Daniel Wallace), was the talk of the town, with Rita joining in the fun, reports Leicestershire Live.
Basking in the festivities with her fellow neighbours, Rita nostalgically recalled her days working in the clubs. When Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) called her a “dark horse”, Rita’s cryptic retort: “Oh you don’t know the half of it” ignited even more curiosity among fans.
The drag extravaganza was a hit with everyone, not least Rita herself. However, fans are abuzz with the thought that a hidden chapter from Rita’s yesteryears might soon be revealed: the revelation of her secret progeny.
Corrie die-hards are all abuzz with speculation about Rita Tanner’s past, especially her early days with Len Fairclough (played by Peter Adamson) when they fostered several children after being unable to adopt. Fans have grown fond of her foster children, especially Sharon Gaskell (Tracie Bennett) and Jenny Bradley (Sally Ann Matthews).
However, avid fans on a Corrie Facebook fan page suspect Rita might have had a child that she kept secret from everyone. One eagle-eyed viewer speculated: “It might not be nothing BUT at the drag queen party Rita said something like ‘you don’t know the half of it’ referring to her past. New storyline incoming for Rita?”.
Another chimed in, pondering over Rita’s life before she became a fixture on the street: “I’ve thought for a while about Rita’s past pre-Weatherfield. Maybe she has a secret child.”
The whispers grew into theories, with someone even positing that Debbie Webster could be Rita’s mysterious offspring.
