EastEnders has revealed the tragic consequences of Elaine Knight’s betrayal, after she was unfaithful to her husband George.

Elaine grew tired of George’s various encounters with his ex-wives this week, and thinking that her husband was with Cindy, she ended up sleeping with a stranger called Stephen.

But when she came home later, George was desperate to apologise and make amends, and horrified Elaine realised that she was the only one who had cheated.

As the Knights busily prepared for Kat and Alfie’s wedding reception, Elaine told Linda the truth. Her daughter urged her to come clean to George, and Elaine eventually confessed to her husband that she had slept with another man.

George was stunned by this bombshell in the latest episode, and Elaine was left alone in the barrel store as he attempted to process his wife’s betrayal.

The pair met to talk shortly after, and Elaine refused to take all the blame for what happened, explaining that Stephen made her feel like the first choice for once, and that George’s lies had made her doubt herself.

Later, Elaine suggested that they move back to Marbella and start again, but George said that the damage had been done – and told her that he was leaving.

Elaine handed him the gift she had tried to give him the previous day, and George was touched that she had bought back the boxing gloves from his first championship.

But Elaine’s gesture sadly didn’t make a difference. As Kat and Alfie successfully tied the knot for the third time outside, George concluded that his own marriage was over.

George packed his things, and he and Elaine broke the news to Gina and Kojo that they were splitting up. Gina was initially furious by Elaine’s hypocrisy, but later apologised to her and insisted she would continue working at The Vic.

That evening, George left the pub with his belongings, leaving Elaine heartbroken as she realised that her marriage was truly over.
