Emmerdale Star Reveals ‘Complete Psychopath’ Joe Will ‘Do Anything’ to Steal Caleb’s Kidney
The tension in Emmerdale is reaching a boiling point as Joe Tate’s desperation escalates. Ned Porteous, who plays Joe, has shed light on just how far his character will go to secure a kidney transplant. Facing chronic kidney disease inherited from his grandfather Frank Tate, Joe is determined to find a way to save himself—no matter the cost.
Initially, Joe attempted to coerce Noah Dingle into being a donor, even going so far as to drug him. However, Dr. Crowley later confirmed that Noah was not a match. Undeterred, Joe set his sights on another blood relative—his uncle, Caleb.
Manipulating local GP Manpreet Sharma, Joe managed to obtain a vial of Caleb’s blood for testing under false pretenses. When Dr. Crowley confirmed that Caleb was indeed a compatible donor, the next phase of Joe’s ruthless plan was set in motion. The doctor assured Joe that all preparations for the operation were in place; all that remained was getting Caleb into surgery—unconscious and unaware of what was happening.
Reflecting on the storyline, Ned Porteous acknowledged that while Joe is undeniably selfish, he does possess some level of human emotion. “I don’t think Joe is a complete psychopath without any empathy,” he explained. “If something were to happen to Caleb, I think Joe would care—but only to a certain extent. At the end of the day, his own survival comes first. He’s willing to accept whatever consequences may come, even if that means crossing moral and ethical boundaries.”
Fans have questioned why Joe hasn’t pursued the traditional NHS route for a transplant. Porteous suggested that Joe likely did consider it but found the waiting time unbearable. “The NHS is incredible, but transplant lists are long. Joe isn’t the type to sit around waiting for months—he sees his own life as more important than anyone else’s. If he believes his time is running out, he’ll do whatever it takes to get what he needs.”
Adding another layer of intrigue, Dr. Crowley reminded Joe that once the procedure is done, they must leave The Dales for good. Joe seemed on board with the plan but failed to disclose a major complication—his growing attachment to Dawn Taylor. As Joe’s feelings for Dawn deepen, he may find it harder to walk away. Meanwhile, if Caleb wakes up and realizes what has happened, the fallout could be explosive.

With Joe’s family ties dwindling, his connection to Noah could also influence his next move. Family is important to Joe, and despite his self-serving nature, he may ultimately choose to stay in Emmerdale for reasons beyond survival. However, with the truth on the verge of exposure and Caleb’s fate hanging in the balance, one question remains—just how far will Joe go to secure his future?
