Emmerdale has aired some tough scenes for Jacob Gallagher as he suffered a meltdown at work.
Jacob was determined to go back to his placement at the hospital to take his mind off his mum Leyla’s birthday.
Despite his grandad Eric Pollard’s hesitance, Jacob insisted he should go back and thanked his girlfriend Sarah for understanding why he needed a distraction.
Things took a distressing turn for Jacob when he was expected to treat a patient with injuries similar to those sustained by Leyla, who sadly died in the double limo crash on Valentine’s Day.
When Dr Todd asked Jacob to help her, his eyes started welling up as he shook his head and repeated he couldn’t do it.
Catching up with his boss later, Jacob apologised for storming out.
“I was thinking of my mum and I just froze,” he said, promising he’d pull himself together.
“I can’t take that risk, I’m afraid,” Dr Todd replied. “I’m sending you home.”
She kindly rebuffed Jacob’s pleas, saying: “You have suffered a major bereavement and you need time to process things.”
She assured him she’d be the one to assess him once he felt ready to get back to work.
“Look after yourself, Jacob. It’s important,” she concluded.
Feeling defeated, Jacob resorted to day-drinking. He rejected Sarah’s calls in a bid to put Leyla’s funeral, which would take place the next day, to the back of his mind.
Having an impromptu house party with friends and continuing drinking, Jacob was stunned when Sarah showed up. She tried to shut down the gathering, telling Jacob he’d never forgive himself if he was hungover at his mum’s funeral.
He shouted at her for meddling in his affairs and kicked her out.
As Sarah was leaving, she checked the content of her bag and the camera lingered on a pregnancy test. Does she have something to tell Jacob?
