Fans of the Yellowstone universe have been eagerly awaiting news about the future of “1923,” the hit prequel series that delves into the Dutton family’s tumultuous past.
After a gripping second season, viewers are left wondering: Is 1923 getting a Season 3, or is this the end of Spencer Dutton’s journey?
As of now, Paramount Plus has not officially announced a third season for “1923.” In fact, series creator Taylor Sheridan made it clear even before the Season 2 finale aired that the show was always intended to be a two-season event.
Back in 2022, Sheridan stated that the story would conclude with the second season, and the final episode certainly feels like a definitive ending. The emotional voiceover revealing the fate of Spencer Dutton brings a sense of closure to his arc, leaving many fans with mixed feelings of satisfaction and longing for more.
However, the story of the Duttons is far from over. While “1923” may have wrapped up its narrative, another Yellowstone prequel is already in development.
Titled “1944,” this new series promises to continue the Dutton family legacy into the era of World War II. Given what we learned in the “1923” finale—that Spencer Dutton doesn’t die until 1969—it’s entirely possible that the character could return in “1944.”
Fans are already speculating that we might see an older Spencer, perhaps even called back to war, or at least grappling with the impact of another global conflict.
Of course, “1944” could also shift focus to a brand-new generation of Duttons, much like “1923” did after the events of “1883.” But with Spencer’s fate still fresh in viewers’ minds, there’s a strong possibility that his story isn’t quite finished.
The success of “1923” also makes a compelling case for bringing back beloved characters; Season 2 shattered records, drawing over 17 million global viewers for its finale—a 41% increase from Season 1. Overall streaming numbers were up by 56%, according to Paramount Global, proving that the appetite for Dutton family drama is stronger than ever.
Despite the show’s massive popularity, the cast and creators appear united in their belief that “1923” has reached its natural conclusion. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Brandon Sklenar, who portrays Spencer Dutton, confirmed that the series was designed to have a clear and complete ending. He explained that although Season 2 was split into two parts, it was always meant to be one continuous story, culminating in the finale that aired.
So, while it looks unlikely that “1923” will return for a third season, the Dutton family saga is far from over. With “Yellowstone,” “1883,” “1923,” and now “1944,” Taylor Sheridan’s storytelling universe continues to expand, offering new perspectives and fresh drama with each chapter.
